It takes a team: The Evolution of an Interprofessional Student-Led Clinic

October 15 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm MDT

Description:

In 2003, the University of Manitoba’s Department of Physical Therapy launched an annual “Neuro Rehab Clinic (NRC)” to address a specific gap: a shortage of neurology-related clinical placements. Fast forward over 20 years: this single profession clinic has transformed into an interprofessional experiential learning environment that gives students authentic hands-on opportunities to collaborate with other health profession students while providing care.

The renamed “Student-Led Interprofessional Clinic (SLIC)” has expanded to bring together students from physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and nursing. Feedback from students, clients, and preceptors has been overwhelmingly positive. Feedback received has been integrated to continuously make changes to improve student learning (but not without some speedbumps along the way).

This presentation will give an overview of the clinic’s continued evolution, sharing the practical lessons learned about what worked (and didn’t) to transform a clinic from a group of students into genuine interprofessional learning teams. We’ll cover how SLIC built experiences that benefit everyone involved: students gaining collaborative skills, clients receiving more holistic care, and programs meeting targets for clinical experiences for their learners.
